When the most powerful wizard in the Castle turns up and picks Ethan as his apprentice, Ethan trades a crowded stone room in the Hollows for the top floor of the Lantern, the tall, thin tower where the wizards live and hardly anyone sleeps. Then a man the Castle calls Mr. Kills starts hunting wizards. A prisoner escapes who should not have been able to escape. And Ethan starts to suspect that the story everyone tells about the villain has the beginning all wrong.
